Spring Light...Peshtigo River 6"x 8" gouache

Such a gorgeous gorgeous day today, the light irresistable
...and opted to drive along areas of the Peshtigo River
not far from home here. Brought both my oil paint box and
gouache, but still feel like I need to get a few more
efforts under my belt with the gouache painting outdoors
on location.

Ginty Creek....gouache 6"x 9"

On route home this later afternoon from
Rhinelander, Wisconsin, decided to give
the gouache a run in the colder weather, see
what I might learn.  Added a drop of glycerin
to each bit of pigment I put out on my palette,
and alcohol to the water cup.

Painted a reddish value varied undertone to
keep the painting warm, and tweak out the
complementary contrasts...

Rat River- Gouache... 6"x 9"

Found a neat little spot about twenty minutes from 
home on the Rat River...which opens up fairly early 
as a sign winter is about on its way out.  The 
reference for this, a plein air from last year...

I myself think of them, but I know

but just lounging around the house
watching the last day of Olympics,
and you can tell by the eyes, in 
need of a bit more sleep...

First attempt doing a portrait using gouache, friends Tim & Connie...8"x 8"

Gearing up to build an itinerary for some possible 

online teaching offerings & opportunity, and my son 

Jason advised I demonstrate my principles apply to 

painting in general, not just my preference for painting

the landscape or outdoor subject.  So, thought I'd do a 

few portraits perhaps.  Of course anyone familiar with

my blog knows my painting interest revolves around

a fascination for light...and thus many subjects, though

my sense of celebration when painting comes from

painting outdoors.

This is my first attempt using gouache to paint
portraits...which I think I'll find interesting.

Started this one tonight of our friends Tim and Connie
...8"x 8" in size.

Began with mixing up a grayish neutral using casein
then proceeding over the top of that.  So, a beginning
here.  You can see the block-in of Connie starts with
shadows and light revealing the planes of the face,
and this is how Tim began...as well, so you see
something of where it starts...and where it goes.

I did not begin with a drawing, but just squinted my
eyes and seeing shapes, values, color...and start
right in painting.

Here a closeup of Tim's face thus far-

...by the way, in case of curiosity...no black pigment
was used.  My dark here is mixed using Prussian blue,
Alizarin Crimson, and a touch of Ice blue...(all Holbein)

This, believe it or not...is my largest gouache todate...

Painted tonight, and you'll see my set up here which 

is making my foree into gouache convenient and 

enjoyable, (clicking on image brings up larger view)-

I've painted with oils predominantly the past 15 years, 

acrylics the 17 years before that...but what makes 

gouache nice is the casual setting up...no mess to speak  

of, ease to clean up, and no smells.  Ordinarily I'd be  

painting outdoors with oils or in my art classroom...here  

I can spend time with my wife, and enjoy some television  

or movie...though I more or less listen and see little by 

comparison of my painting, naturally.

Quinnesec, Michigan's Fumee Falls...6"x 8" gouache

Finished this afternoon...one of my favorite snow on the way out sites to visit to set up and paint on location, as the volume of water makes this falls impressive...

This one done in the comfort of my home however...and early signs of spring yet a long way off...

Cty R Sunset Farm...NE Wisconsin 4"x 8" gouache

Painted on black drawing paper, this is a farm scene typical of late day last light in NE Wisconsin in the fall...a wonderful time to be out and about outdoors.

Bought a watercolor block of paper this past weekend, and experimented by applying India Ink (which is waterproof)...then painted this scene, 4"x 8" with Holbein gouache paints...

A Fall Color's Drive...NE Wisconsin...gouache

Painted this this afternoon while watchin' Favre Company take it to the Cowboys...representing a road just down from where I live, and this past fall's color here in Northeast Wisconsin.  That last light sure paints a lovely blast of color.  A pickup truck drives off in the distance...

Just really have enjoyed the scenery of this SW
Wisconsin area...as the title says, my sixth piece
of this creek area...

Most visitors probably notice I don't push sales on
my work all that often or with vigilence anyway. I
have a few galleries I work with...sometimes sell
online, and probably should market more...but, I'm
busy with my book, writing my next one, painting,
music...and its one of those "when I get some time"
things.

Can't complain..sales of my work have been pretty
decent for how little I put into it, but...I have
an unexpected trip coming up here I have to make,
and decided I would test interest in my gouache
pieces possibly. So, I will add a Paypal buy option
for anyone that might be interested...

Since I won't be matting, framing and glassing and
will leave that up to your decisions...I'll give
what I think is a decent price for my work. The gouache,
being water soluble, will be mailed out protected in
ziplock bag, supported with a stiff support, etc., and
as said you may mat and frame as you see fit...

Hwy 32 Argonne Farm... 4"x 10" gouache

I passed by this farm quite often this fall, heading
to my fall/rut bowstand here in NE Wisconsin..and
was always attracted to the light...
