my art in 77 SQUARE!

CITY GOES TO THE BIRDS WITH TWO NEW ART SHOWS
77 Square article by Lindsay Christians

a few weeks ago i got a call from 77 square arts writer Lindsay Christians, asking about my current art exhibit at ARTspace in downtown madison. i can't even say how flattered i was to be interviewed and featured the following week in an article with local scrap metal art welder Erika Koivunen and her amazing bird sculptures!

it was really amazing to see it in print too! and so much fun to sit out in my backyard on a sunny afternoon and talk all about owls, art and e-courses for the story!

"Bloom" 12 x 12 by carrie schmitt

i've been kind of amazed at all of the gorgeous owls that have come out of my HOW TO PAINT AN OWL e-course! it's been so fun to see everyone start with my simple owl template and painting process and create so many wonderful paintings with characters that are uniquely them!

"You are my Home" 12 x 12 by carrie schmitt

carrie schmitt decided to do owl paintings inspired by each one of her children.

......................................................................

i just received a few more lovely mounted prints and handmade notecards that I had published in somerset studio gallery! so i've decided to do one BIG SHOP UPDATE later this week! full of small originals and other special little gift items.

a sneak peek: video-style!

i am so excited to finally share this video with all of you!

it's a sneak peek at one of the start to finish painting videos I created for my HOW TO PAINT AN OWL e-courseYou can watch it above or visit http://vimeo.com/24884450

it's a snip-it from the painting of my owl  LET THE OUTSIDE IN! you might remember a while back i shared with you the start to finish photos for this same piece. but i have to say, watching the evolution on video, especially to the music of the wiggly tendrils, is just way more amazing!

i had so much fun painting, recording, editing and putting music together for all of the videos, and the wiggly tendrils were sweet enough to let me use their songs for all twenty-three of them! it felt like putting together an animated film of my owls (something i'd also love to see someday!). it's something i never realized i'd have so much fun with!

i'd love to create another e-course for all of you! what would you like to learn? let me know...i'd be so delighted to hear from you!

i hope you enjoy this sneak peek!

A lot of people have been asking whether I’m afraid to be sharing all of my secrets whenever I teach or share my work.

And lately it's something I've been thinking a lot about... with my How To Paint An Owl article in Somerset Studio magazine, my workshops and e-course. Students ask whether it’s alright to take what they’ve learned in my workshops and use those techniques in their paintings and post them online. And whether it's okay to sell those paintings.

Well, the other day I stumbled upon an interview with Maya Angelou on Oprah Winfrey's Master Class series (it's so worth watching!). And when I watched this video, Maya Angelou's words mirrored how I feel about it all.

The video is called, "Hold Nothing Back" (January 16, 2011). In it Maya says, "I hold nothing back. Because I want to see that light go off. I like to see that you would think 'I never thought of that before.' And I think I've got them!"

When I watch that video and hear Maya Angelou speak I get shivers. Because why on earth would I want to hold anything back when I get emails from people who have been so inspired by my work and teaching and created these lovely paintings...

Not to mention all of the AMAZING artwork that has been created during the last 5 weeks while I've been teaching my HOW TO PAINT AN OWL e-course! GORGEOUS!!! And hopefully I'll be lucky enough to share some of that art with you here too!

If someone paints an owl or character inspired by my class, lessons or writing…it’s always wonderful to add a link from wherever you've posted your work to my website or blog, whether you’re posting your creation on facebook or your own blog.

Since this is how I make my living, any and all mentions, links, and kind words about me and my work are always appreciated.

autumn wind. prints available in my etsy shop.

If someone copied one of my paintings, whether it was an owl, a girl, or any one of my characters, and used the same color palette and posture along with the techniques I teach in my workshops… well, then I wouldn’t be happy. Especially if the artist didn't mention my work and if that piece of art was available for sale. If you’re selling a painting inspired by my work or my workshops and you feel it seems a bit too close to something I or someone else has created, then it probably is.

If you're starting with something similar to one of my characters, techniques or backgrounds, I feel it’s important to keep pushing yourself to uncover your own story from there.

share your gifts. prints available in my etsy shop.

I’m passionate about others finding and following whatever they’re passionate about in life. And that doesn’t just mean being inspired to paint, but to create anything you’ve been dreaming about, whether it’s turning your guest bedroom into a library, working at a winery for the summer or taking photos on your morning walks. To me, it’s about learning something new and being inspired to create something and take it in your own direction.

I know I am always learning. My style and artwork is always evolving. That’s why I don’t mind teaching everything I learn because I’m usually already learning or trying something new. So it only seems natural to share.

I’m here to share my art and to give others a place to begin. My hope is that their imagination can wander from there!

How To Paint An Owl Workshop, at the Glitter Workshop, February 5, 2011.

i can hardly say just how proud i am of this photo.

this is my latest graduating class from my How To Paint An Owl Workshop! And i just love seeing these smiling faces and all of their incredible owls!

it all starts with these painted backgrounds on wood that i prepare beforehand.
(i was really very nervous.)

then i brought all of my studio supplies in to share - vintage wallpaper books, origami paper, sheet music, pens, ink, pastels and lots and lots of glitter!

i'm always quite amazed i can get any words out. high school speech class used to be the most terrifying thing,

but once everyone starts laughing and creating...

 and i see everyone painting...

i just want to paint too!

this is the beginning of my little owl.

i just love seeing everyone's owls! each one is always so unique and always such a reflection of the artist!

we always have such an amazing time! and i am so happy to have met so many fabulous people! and for them to have shared their day with me!

................................................................

the lovely kim of kim's crafty apple posted about our class on her blog right here! she' took photos every step of the way, so you can really see just how her gorgeous owl evolved and came to life!

..................................................................

happy valentines day!!!

my first owl painting workshop + somerset studio!

somerset studio magazine, jan/feb 2011 issue

oh my gosh! can you feel my excitement!

i've been waiting for this issue of somerset studio to come out since last august when i first submitted by art and then in september when i first heard my article would be published! and to see my owls in print in this most beautiful publication is absolutely AMAZING!

on the letters to the editor page, there's even a photo of the GIGANTIC box i painted with my signature techniques and submitted with all of my originals! a bit of HOPE goes a long, long way!

thank you to the lovely editor-in-chief of stampington & company, christen oliviarez, and to all of the fabulous people over at somerset studio magazine!

and i'm so excited that i got to share my publication in somerset with my very first HOW TO PAINT AN OWL workshop!!!
i decided to teach my painting workshops after writing that article for somerset! and i cannot even say how much fun i had in class last weekend!

my owl and brian's owl

since it was my first class, i thought i'd better get in some practice and see if my techniques made sense to someone else. so, i taught Brian!

and just look at the awesome owl he painted (right).

because my in-person class last weekend was only four hours, i decided to give everyone a start with a spray painted background (on a block of poplar wood with a sawtooth hanger on the back for easy hanging).

then i packed up my vintage wallpaper books and all of my acrylics, glitter, pastels, ink, brushes, origami paper, sheet music and any other art supplies i had around in my studio!

and i was so amazed to see everyone's owl evolve into their very own! from this initial step...

TITLE: Today At the Park. Prints available in my etsy shop.

into little characters with their own personalities!

and by the end of class, everyone had their own! each with their own unique backgrounds and colors! just look at them all together!

it was such an awesome experience and so fabulous to see everyone smiling with their owls!

THANK YOU everyone for all of your encouragement and support!
